Stop Mice Before They Start: Prevention Tips That Work

Posted by Michael Koski on

Winter is the time when mice look for warm places to escape the cold, and your home can quickly become the perfect shelter. Once you have an infestation it can take time and even professionals to get rid of the problem. Mice can cause damage to your property and carry diseases spreading to your family and pets.

The best way to keep your house mouse free is to keep them out to begin with. Taking simple steps to prevent mice from entering your home can save you time, stress, and money in the long run. In this blog we’re going to look at some easy, practical prevention techniques to stop those mice getting access to your home.

Let’s look at what you can do to protect your home from mice:

  • Keep the area around your home clean and clear
Mice like to nest in leaves, garden waste, and other materials stored outdoors. Keep plants and lawns trimmed and maintain a clear space around exterior walls to reduce potential hiding places.

  • Seal all potential entry points
Mice can fit through openings as small as a coin, making even tiny gaps a potential entry point. Carefully inspect the exterior of your home for cracks in walls, gaps around doors and windows, and openings near guttering or pipework. Sealing these areas is one of the most effective ways to prevent mice from entering your home.

  • Check utility and pipe entry areas
Pipes, cables, and air conditioning units often create small openings where they can pass through walls. These areas should be properly sealed, as mice can squeeze through very small gaps.

  • Secure attics and crawl spaces
Attics and crawl spaces provide warmth, shelter, and nesting areas for mice. Ensure that vents are covered with suitable mesh and that access doors or panels fit securely.

  • Use durable materials for sealing gaps
When blocking holes, use materials that mice cannot easily chew through. Copper mesh or steel wool combined with sealant are the best solution.

  • Store food safely
Food attracts mice. Store dry foods in sealed containers, clean up crumbs and spills quickly, and make sure bins have secured lids.

  • Keep storage areas organised
Mice love clutter! Keep storage spaces clean and organized. Avoid piles of cardboard as these make perfect conditions for nesting.

  • Eliminate water sources
Like all animals, mice need water to survive. Fix leaking pipes, repair dripping taps, and repair damp areas.

  • Use natural deterrents as a supplement
Natural deterrents such as peppermint oil, citronella, and apple cider vinegar may help discourage mice. Check out our blog ‘Are There Any Natural Mouse Repellents that Actually Work?’ to learn more.
