Why Aren't My Mouse Traps Working?

Posted by Michael Koski on

You've discovered mice in your home! Immediately, you invested in the best pest control products you could find. You carefully placed bait and set traps throughout your house, expecting fast results. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and the traps remain untouched, mice are still running around your home. So where have you gone wrong? First of all, just the fact that we've written this article means that you are not the only one experiencing this situation. Mice are intelligent creatures and are wary of new things, including your traps. But that doesn't mean you should give up. With some small adjustments you can still succeed at getting rid of those unwanted pests!

Here are some common reasons why your mouse traps might not be working:

  • You set the traps with bare hands. Did you know that mice have an extremely good sense of smell? If they can smell human scent on the bait or the trap, they might avoid them.

  • You used the wrong type of bait. When trying to catch a mouse, cheese must be the best bait, right? You might be surprised to find out what baits actually work the best and it's not cheese! The best trap in the world will only work if you use the right bait.

  • You put the trap in the wrong place. Mice are creatures of habit, they have specific routes of travel around your property. If the traps are in the wrong place, no matter how good the bait, mice won’t go near enough to be tempted and caught.

  • There are other food sources. Baited traps only work if the mice feel that the bait is the best source of food. If there is uncovered pet food, food crumbs or open bins, mice may choose those food sources over bait.

  • You’re not using enough traps. Even if you’re only trying to catch a couple of mice, using just one trap is not enough. Mice can be suspicious of new objects, and a single trap can easily be avoided.

  • You used too much bait. Sometimes a mouse can eat some of the bait without triggering it, this usually happens when the bait is too big or of too great a quantity.

Now let's discuss the solutions:

  • You set the traps with bare hands. A simple fix- use gloves when handling and baiting your traps.

  • You use the wrong type of bait. This may take a little bit of research. Cheese is not a great bait choice, peanut butter is a much better option. For more information on the best baits read our blog- The Best Bait for Mice

  • You put the trap in the wrong place. Mice are naturally cautious, they tend to move around the perimeter of rooms, especially along walls. Place traps right next to the walls with the bait/trigger facing the baseboard.

  • There are other food sources. To make sure that the bait is the only food available to them, keep you home free from crumbs. Don’t leave pet bowls out overnight and use bins with fixed lids. Limiting food sources should make the bait more appealing.

  • You’re not using enough traps. Mice reproduce at a quick pace, even if you think you only have a couple they can quickly multiply. Place traps every 2 to 3 feet along the walls where you have seen the most activity. Using 5-10 traps at the same time is not overkill, remember you want to eliminate the problem before it gets out of control.

  • You're using too much bait. Use a pea sized amount of bait, such as peanut butter, chocolate or seeds.

Dealing with mice can be frustrating, especially when your traps don’t seem to be working. However, small mistakes in bait choice, trap placement, or setup can make a big difference to your results. By understanding mouse behaviour better and by making a few simple adjustments, you can greatly improve the effectiveness of your traps and take control of the problem before it turns into a serious infestation. Remember, patience and consistency are key when dealing with rodents. With the right approach, you can achieve a mouse-free home.
